Since 2017, VAHI has been developing a range of long-term strategies to address issues with the Victorian Health Incident Management System (VHIMS). VAHI is currently working with the Department of Health and Human Services (the Department) to build a new incident and feedback reporting and management system for 50 small Victorian health services across 97 sites.
Incident reporting in health care has been a source of great frustration for frontline users and their managers for more than a decade. Our goal is to create better, safer care for patients and a safer workplace for staff. We’re using the extensive feedback we continue to gather from healthcare workers about the challenges and obstacles they face when entering incidents, hazards, complaints and compliments to build the platform.
The new system, known as VHIMS Central, has been developed and designed in partnership with healthcare staff from the beginning. More than 130 VHIMS users have signed up to be part of the VHIMS Critical Friends group, a community of volunteers who are testing the system and providing invaluable feedback about the look and feel of the new platform.
VAHI recently hosted 53 Critical Friends over four two-hour sessions for a look at the pre-release system.
Feedback from the sessions was overwhelmingly positive:
‘From a frontline staff point of view, it is fantastic to use. I think the big thing for staff is being able to enter the info efficiently.’
‘Very intuitive to use and you can see how close you are to finishing.’
‘The “help us improve” function is a great addition’
‘I came today to see the new system in action and it is great! Looks great and is very intuitive and user-friendly.’
VHIMS Critical Friends will be involved in testing the next stage of the pre-release system again in the next few weeks. Their valuable contribution will shape the future of incident entry for over 15,000 clinicians and healthcare staff who use the current iteration of VHIMS Central.
