Governance/leadership

Safer Care Victoria is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Chief Allied Health Officer, Ms Briana Baass. Briana will replace Ms Donna Markham who has served in the role since 2018, providing leadership and strategic direction for Victoria’s allied health workforce.

Briana has more than 20 years of experience in the health sector across Australia, including clinical treatment, health service operations, various roles in a government department and seven years of consulting in a large global firm. She is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Service Management, a graduate of the College’s Management Residency Program and in 2017, she was appointed to the National Board. Her experience is aligned to organisational performance as well as health system reform; in particular in the areas of health sector governance and connecting touchpoints across the system.

With a background in clinical prosthetics and orthotics, Briana has provided direct care to people with acute, chronic and complex needs. She has also spent several years focusing on mental health including working together with Beyondblue on evaluating the NewAccess program, with a particular focus on reaching men across Australia.

Victoria’s Chief Clinical Officers provide expert leadership, advice and guidance on healthcare quality and safety to Safer Care Victoria and the Minister for Health. They also represent their professions on policy and operational matters at the state’s highest levels. While the Chief Clinical Officers have a strong focus on quality and safety improvement, they also provide advice and guidance on profession specific matters across the Department of Health and Human Services.

Briana will commence with SCV on 17 January 2022. She will continue to support Northern Health three days a fortnight, as a ‘Special Projects Advisor’ working on key projects including ‘Allied Health Workforce Management’ focusing on maximising the effectiveness and efficiency of the workforce and Briana will also be continuing her work on developing Northern Health’s key partnerships.
