Maternity and newborn

Statement from Prof Euan Wallace AM, CEO of Safer Care Victoria:

"The revised restrictions on hospital maternity visitors are based on the advice from Safer Care Victoria and our state's leading maternity experts - our most senior obstetricians and midwives.

"Partners can remain with the woman throughout her labour and birth and for as long as desired afterwards. Subsequent visits are allowed for up to two hours a day. This has not changed. These restrictions provide clear guidance for women and their care providers allowing them to prepare for the birth of their baby.

"Only the partner (or support person) of the woman may visit her during her hospital stay. Other visitors are not allowed. This is new and will keep new mothers, their babies and hospital staff safer.

"We know that this will be challenging for patients including new parents, but the restrictions balance the needs and preferences of women with the need to care for them and their babies in an environment free from COVID-19."
