As Victoria’s dedicated health information agency, VAHI is pleased to support the health information managers, clinical coders and data analysts of the future by providing professional placement opportunities for undergraduate and post-graduate programs.

In 2020, VAHI partnered with La Trobe University to host three student placements. Students in their final year of studying health information management completed their three-month placements as part of a professional practice unit of study. Students were placed in different teams across the agency, including health system reporting and clinical coding and classification.

Natalie Maguire was one student who completed a placement, primarily supporting the VAHI Data Request and Analytics Hub and clinical measurement and reporting teams.

“Working across two very different teams provided me with an opportunity to develop a broad range of skills; from completing data requests using key health data collections, to assisting in the production of two new reports,” Natalie said.

Throughout her placement, Natalie supported many activities, including data specification, extraction, auditing and presenting, report editing and stakeholder engagement. Among highlights from her placement, she contributed to the development of the inaugural Hospital-acquired complications in Victoria report. This project allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of clinical indicators and hospital-acquired complications more generally, and work alongside other teams from across the agency.

“The placement provided great insight into some of the non-traditional roles that health information managers can pursue,” she said.

“The range of activities and projects I contributed to allowed me to link the theoretical perspectives I had learnt at university with real-life scenarios and issues. It has been a very valuable learning experience.”

VAHI has recently commenced hosting placements for students completing La Trobe University’s Master of Data Science program, and we look forward to continuing to partner with universities to provide valuable work experience to students with interests in health information and data through 2021 and beyond.
