Safety cultures

Eleven health services involved in the Better Care Victoria (BCV) Choosing Wisely scaling collaboration, will showcase work they are currently delivering in their service during 4-8 March 2019.

Through a series of activities, participating health services will share their results to increase awareness of the Choosing Wisely initiative. Look out for the #ChoosingWisely conversations on Twitter.

What is Choosing Wisely?

Launched in 2015 by NPS MedicineWise, Choosing Wisely Australia aims to improve the quality of healthcare by starting a conversation about tests, treatments and procedures that are shown to provide no benefit or, in some cases, lead to harm.

Scaling for success

First implemented at Austin Health, the Choosing Wisely initiative is being scaled to 11 health services across the state through the Better Care Victoria Innovation Fund.

With an emphasis on cultural behavioural change, the scaling collaboration aims to increase the number of Choosing Wisely champion hospitals in Victoria.

During the past six months, Choosing Wisely project teams have focused on pathology and radiology. Teams are currently looking at how to reduce unnecessary investigations, such as daily chest x-rays in intensive care units, coagulation studies in the emergency department and CT imaging after hours.
